During Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 10, with Taylor Swift sitting courtside, Knicks radio analyst Monica McNutt was caught on a hot mic saying "She's not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl." She didn't seem to know she was broadcasting. Swift's fans piled on, and by the next morning McNutt was walking it back, conceding she'd misspoken. Swift, as it happens, has been going to Knicks games since 2014.
1. She Dissed a Fan Who's Been Coming Since 2014 (Taylor Swift's fans)
Swift has real Knicks history. "Get out of here, girl" landed as a put-down.
Swift isn't a bandwagon fan, and the receipts are old. She's gone to Knicks games at the Garden since 2014, and posed courtside with Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire back in the day. To her fans, "get out of here, girl" was just a put-down of a woman who's been showing up for over a decade.
The pile-on was fast and personal. Swift's fans lit up over the clip within hours, and McNutt was walking it back by the next morning.
2. It Was a Hot Mic, Not a Statement (Monica McNutt)
She didn't know she was live, and she owned it fast.
McNutt didn't know the mic was on. The line was an aside in the booth, not something she chose to put on air, and she didn't appear to realize she was broadcasting. By Thursday morning she'd walked it back on TMZ: "Swifties, I appreciate your passion. I said what I said and here's the deal, if I'm wrong, and I am wrong apparently because we've got an OG Amar'e Stoudemire jersey. I misspoke. I apologize."
She just mixed up Swift's teams. McNutt thought Swift was a Cavaliers fan after seeing her at a game in Cleveland with fiancé Travis Kelce, who's from Ohio. It was a wrong guess said out loud, not a takedown she planned.
3. Celebrity Row Isn't the Same as Being a Fan (fed-up Knicks fans)
The camera keeps finding famous faces who aren't really there for the team.
McNutt's real gripe was about who actually shows up. "I know the celebrities that are there consistently," she said, and "I have not seen her all season or the last season." Swift wasn't in Knicks gear, and McNutt read her as a face the broadcast found, not a regular.
Plenty of fans are tired of the celebrity cam. The complaint underneath the gaffe — that broadcasts keep cutting to famous people who aren't there for the basketball — is one real fans make all the time. McNutt got the Swift facts wrong, but the annoyance she voiced wasn't hers alone.
Where This Lands
Taylor Swift's fans say McNutt dismissed a woman who's been at the Garden since 2014. McNutt says it was an offhand line she didn't know was on air, and she took it back the next morning once someone produced an old Stoudemire jersey. And a lot of Knicks fans say she was wrong about Swift but right about the bigger thing — that the camera keeps finding celebrities who aren't really there for the team. One hot mic, and everyone heard what they already believed.
