Daniil Medvedev, the world No. 5, was defaulted out of the China Open on Monday. Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, was serving for their semifinal in Beijing, up 7-5, 5-3. His forehand volley winner bounced off the advertising boards and back toward Medvedev. Medvedev hit a backhand into the front row. It struck a man near his left eye. He held a hand over his face as stadium staff helped him out of the arena. Chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani and the tournament supervisor came onto the court and defaulted Medvedev. He shook hands with Djokovic and walked off. Tournament organisers later said the spectator had been taken to hospital. The default wipes out Medvedev's ranking points and prize money from the week. Djokovic plays ninth-ranked Alex de Minaur in Tuesday's final.
1. He Didn't Mean It, and Nobody Wanted This Ending (Medvedev, Djokovic, Sky's Annabel Croft)
He says he was trying to keep the ball on the court, and Djokovic, who was defaulted himself in 2020, takes him at his word.
He says he was just keeping the ball in play. Medvedev told reporters it was "100 per cent accident" and that he didn't hit the ball in anger. "The ball was bouncing back so I tried to just hit it anywhere so it doesn't go out from the court," he said. He added that he does "a lot of bad things but usually ball abuse is not my thing." He said he felt horrible when he saw the result and is trying to reach the spectator to apologise in person.
He has backing from a player who got defaulted himself in 2020. Djokovic was defaulted from the 2020 US Open after a ball he hit in anger struck a line judge in the throat. On Monday he told Sky Sports: "I'm sure that Daniil didn't want to do this intentionally. It just happens." He called the ending "a bit of a shock" and said he hoped the spectator wasn't badly hurt. He also said he felt sorry for Medvedev because he knows "exactly how it feels to be disqualified in a big match."
Players get emotional, and the crowd sits very close. That is how Annabel Croft, the former British No. 1 working the match as Sky's pundit, saw it. "We see so much emotion with players that sometimes it bubbles over like this, and with the crowd so close, these things can happen," she said. She called it "a great shame" that a match of that quality had to end that way.
2. But Stupid Counts, and the Rule Makes It Automatic (Martina Navratilova, Sky's Pete Odgers)
Reckless is enough. The code doesn't ask whether he was angry, and it doesn't leave the umpire a way out.
Doing something stupid is enough to get you defaulted. Martina Navratilova, the 18-time major singles champion, posted on X: "Medvedev just did a really stupid thing and he should be defaulted." The Telegraph quoted her follow-up: Djokovic "would have most likely served the match out anyway but yikes – automatic default."
The rule doesn't ask whether he was angry. The ATP code defines ball abuse to include "hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly within the court or hitting a ball with disregard of the consequences." Pete Odgers, commentating for Sky Sports, said after watching the replay: "Unfortunately, the umpire was left with no choice."
The reporters in the room didn't see a reflex either. AP wrote that Medvedev hit the ball "in apparent frustration," and the Irish Times wrote that he struck it "in frustration." AP also reminded readers that he was fined in April for smashing his racket seven times during a 6-0, 6-0 loss in Monte Carlo.
Players demanded exactly this two years ago. American Alex Michelsen hit a fan with a frustrated swat in the 2024 Winston-Salem final and was not defaulted. Australia's Nick Kyrgios posted "DEFAULT. my goodness stop with these grey areas." Brazil's Bruno Soares, a former doubles player, called it "instant default." Monday's call is the standard those players asked for.
3. Still, the Rulebook Says "May," and Players Have Won Money Back (Sportico's Lev Akabas)
The default was a judgment call, and the ATP has reversed the financial hit before.
The rulebook leaves the default to the supervisor's judgment. Lev Akabas, Sportico's data reporter, wrote Monday that whether ball abuse "constitutes a default is left to the discretion of the chair umpire and the tournament supervisor." The rulebook's own default clause says the supervisor "may default a player either for a single violation of the Code (immediate default) or as outlined in the Point Penalty Schedule." Akabas counts roughly one or two defaults a year on tour over the past two decades.
Defaulted players have won their money back before. Russia's Andrey Rublev was defaulted in Dubai in 2024 for yelling at a line judge. He appealed, and the ATP ruled that losing his prize money was a disproportionate penalty. He kept his $158,000 and paid a $36,400 fine instead. Canada's Denis Shapovalov won a similar appeal later that year. The rulebook says the default itself "shall be final and may not be appealed," but those fights were about the money, not the result.
The ranking points could cost him a spot at the ATP Finals. Medvedev loses roughly $220,000 for the week, which Akabas calls the second costliest default ever, behind only Djokovic's in 2020. The 200 ranking points matter more. Akabas has Medvedev eighth in the year-to-date race, only a few hundred points ahead of de Minaur. The top eight go to the ATP Finals in November.
Where This Lands
Medvedev says it was an accident, and Djokovic says these things just happen. Navratilova and Sky's Pete Odgers say a reckless swat is enough, angry or not, and the code says the same. Sportico says the supervisor had discretion and the ATP has handed defaulted players their money back before. The default itself can't be appealed under the rulebook. Medvedev can still ask the ATP for his prize money, and the ATP can still add a fine of its own. De Minaur plays Djokovic for the title on Tuesday. If de Minaur wins, he cuts further into Medvedev's lead for the last ATP Finals spot. Organisers have said nothing more about the man in the front row since announcing he was taken to hospital.
