The Arizona Cardinals lost 36-24 to the New York Giants on Sunday, and the moment everyone's talking about happened on the sideline. With under five minutes left and Arizona down three, Giants cornerback Dru Phillips hit tight end Trey McBride before the ball arrived on third-and-2. No flag came. McBride pleaded his case on the way off the field. CBS cameras caught line judge Jeff Seeman, an NFL official since 2002, appearing to tell him "F— you" twice. McBride pointed at the camera. By Sunday night the league said it was looking into it, and the NFL Players Association demanded Seeman face what a player would face. Elsewhere, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel drew a flag for cursing at an official, and referee Adrian Hill appeared to yell at Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson after Wilson got blocked into him. The league is reviewing that video as well.
The union says officials must face what players face
NFLPA chief JC Tretter wants Seeman disciplined the way a player would be.
The union wants Seeman punished the way a player would be. NFL Players Association executive director JC Tretter posted Sunday that "this kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable," that "players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed," and that the union expects "the NFL to hold officials to the same standard."
The rulebook already covers this, but only for players. Officials can flag players for unsportsmanlike conduct for "abusive, threatening, or insulting language or gestures" toward officials. NBC News asked the league whether any rule governs officials' language toward players. The league didn't answer.
McBride was the polite one in that exchange. That's from CBS Sports sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala, who said she was standing right there. She said it started with McBride saying "please" while asking for a flag, and the harshest thing he said was "You're ruining the game." Yahoo Sports NFL writer Frank Schwab asked what a player would get for the same words: "a fine of $20 grand? $30 grand?" Longtime NFL scout Greg Gabriel said officials "should be held to a much higher standard."
Vrabel says his cursing was nothing derogatory
Mike Vrabel and Eric Wilson both played down their own run-ins with officials.
Vrabel drew a flag Sunday for cursing at an official. The Patriots head coach got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the second quarter against Buffalo after telling an official a holding call was "a f-----g terrible call," according to referee Bill Vinovich's pool report. The two penalties gave Buffalo first-and-goal, and Josh Allen scored three plays later.
The official overreacted to routine words. That's Vrabel's account: "I've said that 87 times since I've been a head coach. It was nothing derogatory. You'd have to ask him. I think he was a little sensitive." He conceded he "probably shouldn't have swore" and said he has "to be better in those moments." Asked in the pool report whether coaches get a warning first, Vinovich said: "I don't know how you're going to give a warning. It's not something that is going to happen twice."
The Vikings run-in ended with an apology and a laugh. A Dolphins running back blocked linebacker Eric Wilson into referee Adrian Hill after a whistle in the first quarter and knocked Hill down. Hill got up, appeared to yell at Wilson and pointed him away. Wilson told reporters: "That was funny, honestly. I ended up apologizing to him and explained the situation. He was cool about it." He said Hill told him he was just trying to keep Wilson and the running back from fighting. The two talked it over at halftime.
Analysts say the officials were the story all weekend
Broadcasters and coaches say the problem is bigger than one line judge.
The whole week embarrassed the officials. Seattle radio host Dick Fain of 93.3 KJR posted "an absolutely embarrassing week for the officials" as the Seeman video spread Sunday. The Hill clip and the Vrabel flag came the same day. Sports Illustrated's Mike Kadlick wrote that referees became the story of Week 4 with several bizarre moments.
One game drew 24 flags. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said after his team's game against Cincinnati: "Man, that was wild. I've never been a part of anything like that before in my life. I'm not going to say anything to get fined, but that was just mental."
The cameras catch what used to go unseen. Former NFL player Jerry Hughes Jr. wrote: "There are too many cameras around today's games. They'll finally catch the bad ones."
Where This Lands
The union wants a public punishment for Seeman that matches what a player would get. Vrabel and Wilson played down their own run-ins. The analysts say the problem is bigger than one line judge after a weekend when officials drew more attention than the games. The league has said only that it's looking into both videos, and the NFL Referees Association hadn't responded to requests for comment as of early Monday. The league didn't answer NBC News on whether it even has a rule for this, though it did dismiss three officials in April 2025 in the name of accountability. WFAA's Mike Leslie wrote that Tretter's statement "will make certain that the league has to address it." We'll know Tretter got his way if the league names Seeman publicly.
