Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige unveiled the cast for the MCU's X-Men reboot Saturday night at D23, the Disney fan event in Anaheim. The team includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver joined via video from Pinewood Studios and revealed he's playing Mister Sinister under the alias Nathaniel Milbury. He initially started to say "Magneto" before switching course. The film, directed by Jake Schreier, is scheduled for May 5, 2028. Wolverine and Magneto remain uncast; Feige said more casting is coming.
1. The Bold Bet (Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios; Eric Diaz, Nerdist; Gay Express)
Marvel picked indie-cinema actors with no franchise history — and the Connor casting would be a first for superhero film.
Feige cast for dramatic credibility over name recognition. Christopher Abbott's credits include Possessor and It Comes at Night. Sadie Sink built her name on Stranger Things. Kit Connor has an upcoming role in Alex Garland's A24 Elden Ring adaptation. Slashfilm reported that Marvel is deliberately "going young," targeting actors in their early-to-mid 20s.
Connor as Cyclops is a first for superhero film. He's an openly bisexual actor playing the field commander of the X-Men — the character who anchors the Jean Grey–Emma Frost love triangle. Nerdist writer Eric Diaz argued Connor would be "perhaps the only openly LGBTQ+ actor in a leadership/heterosexual romantic lead role in a big-budget superhero movie." Diaz added that such casting wouldn't have happened a decade ago "for fear of intense backlash."
The X-Men franchise has been a queer allegory since 1963. Gay Express noted that the franchise's core premise has resonated with queer audiences since the original Stan Lee/Jack Kirby comics — people born different who hide it from family, find community among their own, and face a society that fears them. Feige described the film as "Jean Grey's story" and said it opens "the age of mutants" in the MCU. In that reading, the casting is the point, not incidental to the franchise's identity.
2. The Skeptics (@jingoisticpig; Jon Del Arroz; Legacy Fan Communities; Breitbart)
The Fox franchise ran 20 years. Rebooting while its cast is still active creates a continuity mess — and the announced lineup has conspicuous gaps.
Marsden is already playing Cyclops. Fox-era actors are confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, opening December 18, 2026: Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Scott Summers, who said the return has "been a blast." Audiences will watch Marsden's Cyclops in December 2026 and Kit Connor's Cyclops in May 2028.
Wolverine and Magneto aren't in the cast yet. Of the six heroes named Saturday, four are women: Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, and Storm. Wolverine, Beast, Iceman, Gambit, Colossus, and Magneto are all absent. X user @jingoisticpig argued Marvel should have "just rehired James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, the smartest thing to do." Jon Del Arroz, a conservative comic book blogger, posted "Where are the men?" Feige did say more casting is coming.
Conservative critics have a specific objection to Connor. Breitbart's headline described him as a "baby-faced, bisexual Brit," pointing to his sexuality and nationality rather than his acting work. Connor came out as bisexual in November 2022, posting: "I'm bi. Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself." Social media critics questioned whether an actor most known for a gay teen romance series fits Scott Summers — the "all-American" field commander of the original X-Men. Fans online called Abbott's Professor X casting also off-archetype: "He looks more like [Professor X's] grandson."
Where This Lands
Feige has made his intentions clear: this is a prestige reboot with indie-cinema talent, not a nostalgia act. LGBTQ+ press and cinephiles see the Connor pick as both artistically and historically right. Skeptics split into two camps: legacy fans resent the continuity confusion of running two simultaneous Cyclops actors, and conservative critics contest the identity-casting logic. Wolverine and Magneto aren't cast yet; those picks will show whether the gender ratio in the announced lineup was strategic or just incomplete. The film opens May 5, 2028.
