The US and Iran have been fighting on and off since February 2026, when a US-Israeli strike killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. An April ceasefire broke down, and the war has flared again since mid-August. Early Saturday, Iran's Revolutionary Guard fired missiles at two US Navy ships near the Strait of Hormuz; both evaded them and no Americans were hurt. The US then struck three Iranian oil tankers, disabling two and destroying a third. Iran hit back Sunday, targeting three more tankers, three US-linked vessels, and a US Navy drone attempting to enter the strait. Hours later, Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said in a speech posted to Telegram that "the era of 'proportionate responses' is over" and promised "faster, heavier, and more painful" retaliation going forward.

1. Iran's Hardliners Say Restraint Is Over (Ghalibaf, IRGC, Kayhan's Shariatmadari)

Ghalibaf just adopted the hardline position his own camp accused him of abandoning two weeks ago.

Ghalibaf drew a hard line Sunday. He said the US should have known proportionate responses were over. He called Iran's recent strikes "only the beginning." And he warned that any future US or Israeli move against Iran's interests gets a "faster, heavier, and more painful" answer.

This is a reversal. On Aug. 26, Kayhan editor Hossein Shariatmadari publicly accused Ghalibaf of sounding too much like Iran's reformists, warning that even a passing overlap with their views on negotiation risked his "revolutionary credentials." Shariatmadari wrote that "the Ghalibaf we know does not tremble under enemy pressure." Ghalibaf pushed back the next day, insisting "negotiation has neither intrinsic value nor is it taboo," but by Sunday he'd dropped the negotiating talk entirely.

The IRGC backed the rhetoric with strikes. Iran's navy said it hit three tankers on an "unauthorised route" through the Strait of Hormuz, plus three vessels tied to the US and a US military drone boat trying to enter the strait. It called the operation a "decisive attack." Security council secretary Mohsen Rezaei has gone further still, floating restrictions on Iran's own oil exports as leverage.

2. Iran's President Wants This Over, From Strength (Pezeshkian, Central Bank Gov. Hemmati)

Pezeshkian's case: Iran already won this round, so it should stop fighting while it's ahead.

President Masoud Pezeshkian wants the war to end now, not later. "It is better that we bring the war to an end now as we are in a position of power and dignity," he said Aug. 21. He argued the world already recognizes Iran's position, and pointed to US strikes on schools, hospitals and infrastructure.

He's offered a specific off-ramp. On Sept. 1, Pezeshkian said Iran would "immediately take reciprocal action" if the US returns to the terms of a June memorandum of understanding, adding that "war is not in anyone's interest."

His central bank chief backs him up, from a different angle. Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said Sept. 1 that Iran has enough foreign currency reserves to withstand sanctions and stood ready to inject $2 billion into the currency market to steady it. His point: Iran can afford to stop fighting, not that it has to keep fighting to survive.

3. Washington Reads This As Iran Cracking, Not Escalating (Treasury Secretary Bessent, Adm. Cooper)

The US treasury secretary thinks Sunday's strikes are a symptom of Iran losing, not a show of strength.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the attacks are a sign. At a G20 finance ministers meeting in late August, he said of Iran's stepped-up strikes: "I would think that they are lashing out kinetically because they are losing economically."

His own numbers back that read. The IMF projects Iran's economy will shrink 6.1% in 2026, and Bessent has warned Iran's economy could collapse within months under the sanctions campaign his department is running.

CENTCOM is promising to keep making that math worse. Adm. Brad Cooper has framed the US response as deliberately disproportionate: "If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost — taking out three of yours." He's also said the US will "destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil fleet" if necessary.

4. Gulf Neighbors Just Want The Shooting To Stop (UAE, Saudi Arabia)

The UAE and Saudi Arabia agree on what happened and disagree on what to do about it.

The UAE isn't holding back anymore. Its foreign ministry called the recent strikes on Gulf states "a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the brotherly nations," and the UAE has taken more Iranian attacks than any other Gulf Cooperation Council member.

Saudi Arabia wants a deal, not more deterrence. Its foreign ministry condemned Iran's strike on the Saudi tanker Sidr in the strait, but Riyadh has been pushing Pakistan-brokered peace talks over further escalation.

Bahrain and Kuwait are just absorbing hits. Bahrain says its air defenses shot down Iranian drones; Kuwait says it intercepted drones and put out a fire an attack caused at a residential complex. Neither is a combatant.

Where This Lands

Iran's parliament speaker says the country is done responding proportionately, and its navy backed that up Sunday by hitting a US drone and three more tankers. Iran's president says the opposite: end the war now, from strength, before it costs more. Washington's treasury secretary reads the fresh strikes as Iran's economy buckling, not Iran gaining ground. The UAE wants harder deterrence; Saudi Arabia wants a negotiated exit. Iran's hardliners, Iran's president, Washington, and the Gulf states watched the same Sunday and drew four opposite conclusions from it.
